Training in first aid for dogs is a vital skill for a pet owner. Dog owners are some of the most caring people in the world. Many are close to a nervous breakdown, if the damage must get your dog. Unfortunately, some owners who feel tremendous love for her dogs mean seriously overestimate the dog's ability to understand the risks around them and avoid injury. Even more problematic, most dog owners have no idea what to do if your dog is injured.
The first step a landlord must take to prepare to administer first aid for your dog is producing a first aid kit and keep some handy place. Among other articles of this first aid kit should include contact numbers day and night for the dog's veterinarian, with directions to the vet's office and the number for the local center for poison control. Locating these numbers quickly in case of an emergency can save lives of your dog.
Other items to be included in the first aid kit mirror much of the contents of a folder for normal human beings as bandages and dressings of various sizes, scissors, tweezers, cotton, cotton swabs, a rectal thermometer and disposable gloves. For dogs, it helps to have a thick towel hand in case you need a stretcher. It also includes a rehydrator as Pedialyte and a dense high-calorie supplement designed for dogs. Medicines you should be available include diphenhydramine hydrochloride (an allergy medicine safe for use in dogs. You must remove the proper dosage with your veterinarian ahead of time), ointment antibiotic, eyes and ears washed, sterile saline, hydrogen peroxide, cortisone spray and activated carbon. Having the tools required to hand can make the difference between an emergency and a tragedy.
One of the most common pet injuries involving insect bites - bites of bees, wasps or fire ants. Dogs can not tell how bad a bite might worry about what we must be careful when the dog has been stung of either party could have happened. A bite reaction that normally occurs within 20 minutes. Any dog that has a strong reaction to a sting should be closely monitored for the next 24 hours. There is a risk of anaphylactic shock.
If you notice your pet scratching home too much, or bite a particular area you should check the bite of an insect. You must give the dog first aid as soon as possible. A paste of baking soda and water can be applied for quick relief. If that fails, diphenhydramine may be necessary to administer the appropriate dose.
Another major source of injury is the chocolate dog poisoning. Dogs love to go into the chocolate, however, a dose as small as 1 oz. milk chocolate o .1 oz baker's chocolate per pound of body weight, could easily be toxic. At least, lower doses can cause difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea and increased body temperature. If you suspect your pet has ingested a large amount of chocolate, which should induce vomiting by administering 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide with a syringe and get the dog to the vet as soon as possible.
These are just a couple of potential emergency situations where the dog can prepare the difference between recovery and death. Knowing the right thing to do in case of an injury to your dog can save you a world of unnecessary pain. Talk to your vet and make sure you are prepared before the hazard occurs.
