An old joke, but as the 21st century unfolds, it becomes more than ever. Compared to previous generations, people today can find working in the kitchen more easy and even fun. The devices competing for precious counter space in kitchens across the country are ready to cut, dice, peel, mix, baking and grilling so that the great-grandparents would have astounded its owners.
A century ago, the idea of cooking devices simply did not exist. There empty manuals, and many homes had only a fridge, a washing tub and a sink with cold water, usually operated by a bomb. Often the pump was outside the back of the house, or on the street for communal use. With the advent of electricity, the idea of saving devices labor gradually took hold. Fifty years later, iceboxes were replaced by refrigerators, which broke the ice they have delivered. Toasters became one of the first devices in any place in your home for consumption. One of the first against the superior machine seen in many homes was the electric can opener. Viewed over time as a frivolous novelty, now day is difficult to imagine opening cans without them (especially since no one can remember where the old crank can opener is). Followed closely was the coffee machine, taking over from the coffee pot that sat on a burner of the stove. And its close cousin, the kettle. Machines like the blender were first developed for commercial use, and quickly found its way into domestic service.
The next great advance in technology in the kitchen was a microwave in the 1970s. He went to the kitchens of what the video was in the living room - revolutionary in itself, can now be seen as the beginning of a wave of gadgets that are aligned next to the sink. Soon after, the market exploded with toaster ovens, sandwich grills, pasta makers, ice cream makers, yogurt makers, etc.. This reached a zenith with the arrival of a food processor. Viewed as a kind of companion home computer (also known as "word processor", since no one could think of another use for a computer in the days before the Web), the kings of the counter with blender, grater, destroyer, cutter, cutter and a few more things, everything in one package.
Right on the heels of the food processor was the bread machine. As the nation longed for a healthier, more natural diet, something that could mix, knead and bake a staple as bread was seen as coming of a new way of thinking about what we eat. Unfortunately, while many households have bread machines today, few actually get any use. The bread pans are smaller than commercially sold loaves, the mix makes the bread much more expensive, the machine needs cleaning after each loaf, and nobody really wants to slice more. So not every step forward has been fully accepted by the masses.
The future of kitchen appliances, however, looks brighter than ever. In a world where the opener seems quaint with the modern non-stick grid, the next big revolution will be to interconnect all these devices to the intranet of a house. At the end of this century, most western kitchens may be a hive of activity on the network, as devices share information between themselves, larger equipment, such as the oven and fridge, and even over the Internet. No doubt the new machines will be introduced some bizarre hybrids of what we already have, some of them unknown to us as a microwave would have been in 1907. Our great-grandchildren will laugh to themselves and to reflect on all the effort we put into our butter toast or remove coffee every morning. Are you ready for the kitchen the future?
